I recall, that at the initial board meeting, all of us went around and shared what we envisioned HRiNK doing this school year. I don't particularly remember what I said, but one set of words stands out clearly to me, and it goes something like this:
"I want to change people's perception of North Korea as being a Korean issue. It's not just a Korean issue. It's not even just an Asian issue. It's a worldwide humanitarian issue, something that should be broadcast out on the streets just like Sudan or Rwanda. Millions of people are dying here, and not enough people know about it. Something's wrong with this picture, and that has got to change."
What have we been involved with this semester? A basic list would include showings of films such as Seoul Train, bringing in a former-refugee speaker, hosting the famed activist Suzanne Scholte, handing out rice krispie portions to show students and community members just how little food the average North Korean is allowed for one meal, and a talk with underground railroad activist Pastor Chun Ki Won. That's what comes to mind when I first think of HRiNK's work this past semester, and I know there's more! Details and perhaps photos to come! :)
